Helen Frances Brugger was born on April 15, 1890 in Columbus, Nebraska. She attended Oberlin College from 1908-1909. She graduated from Mount Holyoke in 1912 with a double major in English Literature and Botany. After graduating, she taught botany, zoology, hygiene, and violin at Brownell Hall in Omaha, Nebraska. Florence Brugger was born on March 27, 1901 in Columbus, Nebraska, and graduated from Mount Holyoke College in 1922. She received a certificate in psychiatric social work from the New York School of Social Work in 1934, and her M.A. in educational sociology from New York University in 1935. She worked at various positions throughout the United States and Hawaii until she began working for the Red Cross in 1942. She became the supervisor for all Middle East hospitals.
